Stonegate Farm

Stonegate Farm (Horseback Riding)

Riding Program:

Students are introduced to riding in a safe, welcoming environment.  Each rider is assessed and assigned a horse and up to three volunteers who lead the horse and assist the rider.  Students progress at their own pace in learning the basics of riding: correct position on the horse, steering and stopping, balance and control at the walk and trot.  Skills are taught through demonstration, repetition, and application in games and drills.  All riders are encouraged to interact with the horses before or after their lesson, grooming, leading and feeding.  Students attend one riding lesson per week, spending 50 minutes riding in a group of up to 4 riders.

Enhanced Program:

In addition to riding skills, the enhanced program introduces students to the basics of horsemanship.  Riders start each lesson with a half hour in the stable, learning to groom, tack up, lead and safely handle horses from the ground.  50-minute riding lessons follow, based around specific goals which are "tested" at the end of each session in the form of a mini "horse show."  Riders demonstrate their accomplishments through games and drills, with each rider receiving a ribbon and certificate to indicate the level reached.  Each week riders receive "homework" on subjects such as horse breeds and colours, grooming and riding equipment, correct naming of various parts of the horse, etc.
